“Ye Tian No.1” (YT01) is a fresh-market sweet corn variety with high folic acid content, jointly developed by the Hainan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the Biotechnology Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and Qilu Normal University. This variety was bred using advanced molecular design breeding techniques and is well suited for high-quality fresh corn production.

2. Key Features

• Plant Structure: Semi-upright growth with an average height of 164.6 cm and ear position at 45.2 cm. Each plant has about 15 leaves.
• Ear Characteristics: Cylindrical ears averaging 17.9 cm in length with 16 to 18 rows of kernels. The ear axis is white, and the kernels are yellowish white, known for their sweetness, with an average weight of 39.2 grams per 100 kernels.
• Quality Assessment: This variety scored 90.2 for appearance and cooking quality. The peel content is 5.38%, with soluble total sugars at 20.49% and reducing sugars at 2.62%. The folic acid content is 139 µg/100g, which is 23% higher than common sweet corn.
• Disease Resistance: The variety is susceptible to the small spot disease and southern rust but shows moderate resistance to the mosaic disease.
• Yield Performance: In fall 2023 and 2024 the average yield is 5046.4 kg per acre.  

3. Cultivation Guidelines

• Sowing Period: Ideal for planting in spring and autumn in Tropical area.
• Isolation Requirements: To prevent cross-pollination, ensure no other corn types are planted within 500 meters or use barriers, and stagger planting by over 20 days.
• Seeding Density: For single seed planting, approximately 500g is needed per 700 square meters, aiming for a density of 4000 to 4500 plants. The sowing depth should be around 2 cm.
• Water and Fertility Management: Apply 100 kg of basic fertilizer per 700 square meters as base fertilization, followed by three applications of a 15-15-15 compound fertilizer.
